Brian & Stella
With my whole heart for my whole life
When I met Stella, there was something about her energy that I really loved. I clearly remember our first encounter. At a work social, I made a corny joke about a movie and she laughed. I knew we were going to be good friends.
Our next encounter was over a month later. I wasn’t even sure she remembered who I was. It was another work social and as we crossed paths, she had a big smile on her face and was frantically waving towards my direction. I assumed she was saying ‘Hi’ to someone behind me, put my head down and moved on. Knowing Stella now, I should have known what was to come next. Later that day she walked right up to me and said “Hey, why did you ignore me this morning?!” I loved how outgoing she was and not afraid to say what was on her mind.
I don’t know how I got so lucky to end up with this woman. Sometimes all her energy and passion drives me crazy, but most of the time it drives me crazier about her. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with Stella.
I remember the exact moment when I realized I was crushing really hard on Brian. He was driving me home and trying to convince me that we should date (it was impressive how persistent he was). I was trying to convince him that he shouldn’t date me because I was a compulsive overeater (sound reasoning, I know). I remember telling him: “I’m like a whale!” to which he responded, “I don’t know if you know this, but my favourite animal is a whale”. Game. Set. Match.
When I look back, I laugh a bit because for someone who knew this was one amazing guy from the beginning, it still took me 6 months to say: “yes, I’ll be your girlfriend”. I’ve never been much of a risk taker and I guess I was afraid I would lose one of my closest friends. Flash forward 5 years and I get to marry my best friend!

While we were dating, Stella had mentioned that whenever she got proposed to she would want it to be in a private setting but for friends and family to join afterwards to celebrate. When it came down to the actual proposal, I had to conquer certain hurdles. How was I going to find a private setting in March, when the weather was still close to 0 degrees? Also, how was I going to get family and friends to join us but not ruin the surprise?
Ultimately, I decided to use my friend’s restaurant (opening soon!) as the private space and set up a fake Facebook event for a restaurant opening to get Stella to attend. With the help of friends, we were able to set up a web cam in the corner of the restaurant to live stream the whole event to friends and family so they could take part in the engagement. It wasn’t easy to get Stella to the event on time but once I did, it was smooth sailing from there. When it was over, everyone joined us to celebrate with champagne. It was an engagement for the history books!
In hindsight, I should have suspected something the night of our friend’s “restaurant opening”. I don’t know at which point I should have known he had something up his sleeve… perhaps when he told me to “change because what I was wearing wasn’t nice enough” or maybe when he was in such a rush to get to the “opening” that he was packing my clutch for me… who knew he was such a sneaky proposal-planning mastermind!?
